Training A Shy Or Fearful Dog

For convenience, we will refer to your dog as “he” rather than “he or she”.

Every dog has a right to be properly trained and every dog owner has the responsibility to ensure that this happens.  It is extremely difficult for a nervous and timid dog to overcome this condition without effective training.  There are a number of real benefits that flow from training your shy, timid dog.  These include the following advantages.

1       It is well known that good training can turn your shy, timid dog into a loving, well adjusted family pet.  It does this by building confidence in your dog.  This confidence will be developed and strengthened more and more as he learns more commands.  Good training will in fact strengthen his spirit.  Good training will make him more playful and his improved confidence will make him more self assured.

2       Good training will develop his intelligence and his capacity to understand you and what you are telling him to do.  This not only increases his understanding of the instructions you give him, but it also increases his capacity to learn new things.  This improves his quality of life.

3       A well trained dog will give greater satisfaction to his owner.  This satisfaction derives not only from the pleasure of knowing that he is much happier and fulfilled than he otherwise would be, but from knowing that the chances of unpleasant situations developing are greatly reduced.  A well trained dog is an obedient dog.

4       It is the desire of every owner to have a dog that exhibits good communication skills.  These good communication skills are almost a guaranteed outcome of good training techniques.  As a result of developing these skills, you dog will quickly realize that your actions and commands are not just random meaningless movements or sounds, but are directed at conveying information or instructions to him.

We wish you every training success and years of enjoyment for both you and your dog.
